Montana Makers Space

a building with trees and plants

Our Mission

We give space to the working artists of today painters, printmakers, sculptors, writers, makers of every kind providing them with the tools, and time to do the work.

About

Montana Maker's Space is the atelier arm of Virginia City Arts, housed inside the schoolhouse under restoration by the Virginia City Schoolhouse Foundation. It offers studio space, shared equipment, and short- and long-term residencies to visual artists, writers, and craftspeople. Some rooms are private studios. Others are open shop space.

The schoolhouse opened as School District #1 and ran classes until 1976. Its floors, its windows, its slat-board bones haven't changed much since. What's changed is what happens inside them: instead of lessons, studio hours. Instead of a chalkboard, an easel.

Montana Maker's Space is open to artists at any stage — local, visiting, or somewhere in between. Studio space is available by application; residencies run on a rolling basis. If you're an artist, apply. If you're passing through Virginia City and curious what's happening behind the schoolhouse windows, stop by during open studio hours.
